In 2014, the Albion Bolton Historical Society marked its 40th Anniversary.
In 1974, several things happened that created an atmosphere conducive to an interest in local history. New people were moving into the subdivisions which were beginning to circle the old village and these people began to become interested in the original community tucked into the Humber Valley with its remnants of old water powered industry, beautiful treed streets, lovely old houses, historic store fronts, and century old churches. In addition, on the 1st of January 1974, the new Region of Peel was officially formed by an act of the Provincial Government and the historic municipal Township names were replaced by Ward numbers and a plebiscite determined that the whole would become the Town of Caledon. This lead to the fear (subsequently determined to be unfounded) that the historic names would disappear. The Rotary Club of Bolton must be credited with the original initiative to see if there was an interest in local history by organizing the first meeting. The response was so positive the Society never looked back. Shortly afterwards, it became incorporated under the banner of Ontario’s premier Society “The Ontario Historical Society”.
Over many years the Society has arranged dozens of talks on local and Peel history, and, during the month of June, organized either walking tours in the Village or other special events. Created the first film of its community ever made by an Ontario local historical society (with modest monetary support by the Bolton Rotary Club and the Ontario Ministry of Culture). Produced for the Town and the Conservation Authority several historic commemorative signs (often with support grants from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and a display companion booklet on the history of the hamlet of Glasgow. It has organized historical exhibits for other organizations, Fall Fairs and done talks, on request, to Ward Four and Five local and private schools and organizations. Members have also represented the Society on many other local community volunteer committees ensuring that community history is recognized in every aspect of inevitable progress into the 21st Century.
